"Global Servants in Christian Education"

      Short Term Curriculum

Our Short-term ESL curriculum consists of the following blocks. Depending on the program, most or all of these components will be offered.

North American Life and Culture:
Students will learn about American and Canadian geography, history, religion, money, sports, entertainment, customs and other aspects of culture.

Meet the O'Neals/ Homestay Diary:
These are lessons based on video stories designed especially for ESL learners.  Students will expand their practical vocabulary, develop their skills in reading and listening comprehension, and gain practice in writing and speaking. In addition, they will learn more about Western culture and lifestyle.

Journal:
Students will be required to keep a daily journal of their time in Canada. Approximately half an hour of class time will be spent each day on journal-writing. Students are encouraged to write about their homestay families, their weekend activities, their classes and anything else that they'd like to record. This is great writing practice, and the journal becomes a permanent reminder of this trip to Canada.

Learning English With Laughter :
This exciting new addition to our program allows students to improve all their English skills while having a good time.

Computer Lab:

Students spend time each week in our modern computer lab.  Specialized software allows them to work at their own pace as they complete their customized learning path.

Reading:
We will supply a range of books and materials for silent reading in English. Students will write reports on the material they have read.

English Games:
This is a time to have lots of fun and learn at the same time. Students are very competitive, and teammates forget that they're using a foreign language as they do their best to win.

Conversation:
Throughout every block except silent reading, there will be many opportunities to practice English conversational skills with teachers and the other students. Our approach is to get students up and out of their seats using the English language without fear.

Optional Program Elements

Outside Activities and Sightseeing

In some programs, we will go off-campus to enjoy the wonderful sights, attractions and activities of the Vancouver area.

Buddies (summer programs only):

For an additional fee, we can bring local Canadian students into the classes. The buddies give our visiting students the chance to practice their English, make friends, and learn more about North American people and culture.

Creative Arts and Sports:
If requested by parents or agents, time will be given several times a week for artwork, cooking, and handicrafts, and to play team sports. Pacific Academy has a fully-equipped home economics lab and several gymnasiums, as well as large playing fields.
